Over the years, oxidation ate through
the clearcoat on the rims. Fortunately, the gold paint in the fins
was still good. I decided to very carefully refinish the rims by hand.
I won't go into the procedure, because it is outlined
here, but basically I sanded off all the clearcoat, and then progressed
to finer and finer sandpaper until the finish was very fine. Some
buffing and polishing, and the rims were as good as new. If I had
to guess, I would say it came out to around 10 hours per wheel. Hard
work, but well worth it for the end result! |

This is what started the whole process. My word of advice, slow
down a tad for bad railroad crossings, or this can happen!
